Neuro-Affirming Autism Therapy
Neuro-Affirming Autism Therapy at Innovative Group Psychotherapy
At Innovative Group Psychotherapy, we provide a dedicated space for neurodivergent individuals to explore their identity and build a life that honors their natural wiring. Our approach is rooted in the Neurodiversity Paradigm, which views Autism as a natural variation of the human experience rather than a condition to be "cured."Supporting Neurodiversity at Innovative Group Psychotherapy
At Innovative Group Psychotherapy, we believe that being neurodivergent is not a deficit to be "fixed," but a unique way of experiencing and processing the world. Our mission is to provide a supportive, neuro-affirming environment where children, adolescents, and adults can move beyond surviving and start thriving.
Understanding the Spectrum: Low Support Needs
In line with current clinical best practices and the preferences of the neurodivergent community, we utilize identity-first and support-based language. We specialize in working with individuals who may have previously been described as "high functioning"—now more accurately referred to as Autistic individuals with low support needs.
We recognize that "low support" does not mean "no support." Many of our clients navigate significant challenges with internal regulation, social exhaustion (burnout), and "masking" (suppressing autistic traits to fit in), which can lead to anxiety and depression.
Therapy Across the Lifespan
Our clinicians are trained to support the unique developmental milestones of Autistic individuals at every age:
Children: We focus on Child-Led Play Therapy and sensory integration. Instead of forcing eye contact or quiet hands, we follow the child’s lead to build trust and foster natural communication.
Adolescents: We support teens as they navigate the complexities of middle and high school, focusing on identity formation, self-advocacy in the classroom, and finding genuine social connections.
Adults: We work with adults—including those diagnosed later in life—to unpack years of masking, manage workplace sensory needs, and build relationships based on authentic self-expression.
Evidence-Based & Affirming Modalities:
Modified CBT: Traditional Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is adapted to account for literal processing styles and focuses on managing anxiety without pathologizing autistic traits.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Excellent for emotional regulation and distress tolerance, helping individuals manage sensory overload or "meltdowns" with compassion.
Expressive Arts & Music: Provides a non-verbal outlet for communication and processing, allowing for self-expression through rhythm, art, and sound.
Social Autonomy Training: Unlike traditional "social skills" groups, we focus on Perspective Taking and self-advocacy, helping clients navigate neurotypical worlds without losing their Autistic identity.
Executive Functioning Coaching: Practical support for "bottom-up" thinkers to manage daily tasks, organization, and transitions in a way that works for their brain.
Our Goal: Self-Acceptance & Empowerment
The core of our work is helping you or your child move from a place of "trying to fit in" to a place of radical self-acceptance. We believe that when an individual understands their own sensory profile and communication style, they can build a life that feels sustainable and joyful.
At IGP we help you navigate a neurotypical world while remaining authentically yourself.
